Unlike the South of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton has real winters, which are caused by the Highlandds, among other factors.  The side by side of snow and the ocean lends a special appeal to this season.

You don't even have to drive.  Hiking and cross-country skiing through the woods straight from your front door has its own appeal.  Sometimes, when it is very cold, it is possible to walk across the ice to the islands.  Make sure to consult the locals before you do, though.

But they didn't tell the whole story. They didn't mention that Nova Scotia is fast becoming the winter vacation destination of choice for discerning tourists- especially upscale European visitors. Where else are convenience of access, unparalleled value, warm hospitality and personal, experiential opportunities so evident? Nova Scotia is THE Canadian winter holiday destination, and the beautiful North Shore area has it all. vacation spots in 2003
